Which Therma-Tru Models This Applies To

Most Therma-Tru doors we install in Miami come from the Classic-Craft, Smooth-Star, or Pulse series. The Classic-Craft line is the one homeowners tend to keep, because the fiberglass grain is close enough to pass for wood at six feet and it doesn’t rot at the sill the way a real wood door does. Smooth-Star is the budget fiberglass line we see a lot of in condo buildings along Brickell and in Kendall townhomes. Pulse doors, the newer composite line, are less common but we work on them regularly.

Identification matters more than most people think. Therma-Tru stamps the model number on the hinge edge of the slab, usually three to four inches up from the bottom. If the stamp is worn or painted over, we measure the slab thickness, the hinge-to-hinge spacing, and the bore location from the bottom. That tells us what we’re working with. One compatibility gotcha that catches people: Therma-Tru hinge spacing is not always standard. Some Classic-Craft models use 3-1/2 inch hinge spacing on the top hinge and 9-inch spacing on the lower two, which doesn’t match a generic prehung from a big-box store. We match the existing mortises, not a generic spec sheet.

For hardware and weatherstripping, we recommend OEM Therma-Tru parts when the door is under warranty. When it isn’t, quality aftermarket equivalents from brands like Endura and Pemko often do the job just as well and cost 20 to 30 percent less. We’ll quote both options on paper and let you see the difference before you commit. The catches are real: an aftermarket sweep that’s an eighth-inch too tall will bind and tear off in a season. We don’t let that leave the shop.

Signs Your Therma-Tru Door Installation Is Failing

• The door rubs at the top corner in summer. This is usually a settling issue or an out-of-square install, not a problem with the slab. In Miami, where we get real heat expansion and seasonal ground shift, this shows up on the strike side first. The fix is often as simple as re-shimming the hinge side and resetting the reveal.
• You can see daylight under the threshold. The threshold cap on a Therma-Tru door has adjustment screws, but once the base is rotted or the cap is cracked, you’re not adjusting it. Water follows that daylight in. In Miami, that means wet flooring and, eventually, a rotted subfloor. We replace the full threshold assembly, not just the cap.
• The sweep is torn, folded, or dragging. A Therma-Tru door sweep is a wear item in South Florida. Heat stiffens the rubber, and then a door that’s slightly out of alignment catches it on the threshold and tears it. We stock matched sweeps for Classic-Craft and Smooth-Star models on the truck.
• Hinges are pulling loose or the door sags on the handle side. This is a sign of stripped hinge screws or a jamb that’s softened from humidity. We pull the screws, check the jamb for rot, and use longer fasteners that reach the framing. In some older Miami homes, that means working around block construction behind the jamb, which is a different repair than a wood-frame house.
• Lock-set binds or won’t throw deadbolt without lifting the handle. Nine times out of ten we see this, the door is out of square or the frame has moved. A new lock won’t fix a binding door. We reset the door first, then check the lock. Measured twice, adjusted once.

There’s a small set of things a careful homeowner can do on a Therma-Tru door without making things worse. You can clean and lubricate the hinge pins. You can check the threshold cap adjustment screws and raise or lower the cap a quarter-inch to fine-tune the seal. You can inspect the sweep for tears and measure it against the threshold. These are maintenance tasks, not repairs.

What you shouldn’t do is attempt to rehang a Therma-Tru slab or pull and reset the frame. A fiberglass door slab with a foam core doesn’t tolerate being horsed around on a hinge adjustment the way a light hollow-core wood door does. And resetting a frame in a Miami home where the rough opening has shifted means dealing with block, stucco, or settled lumber that fights you the whole way.
